Topic: ATD Central Iowa Book Club: Multipliers

    Time: 8:00 AM - 9:00am

When: Thursday mornings on January 30, February 13, March 6, and March 27

Description: Ready for some personal development? Whether you’re curious about joining a book club, looking for a great reason to read Multipliers, or both—this is your chance! Register now to be part of the conversation!

Multipliers by Liz Wiseman explores how great leaders inspire and amplify the intelligence and capability of those around them. The book contrasts "Multipliers," who bring out the best in their teams, with "Diminishers," who unintentionally stifle talent and productivity. Packed with insights and practical strategies, Multipliers helps readers become leaders who elevate others, foster innovation, and achieve extraordinary results.

Each session will feature a rotating facilitator, with the first discussion led by Tatum Voss (Sammons Financial Group, tvoss@sfgmembers.com). Participants will have the opportunity to lead discussions in subsequent sessions. Register now to join us on a journey of personal growth and meaningful change! Don’t miss this chance to explore new perspectives and enhance your leadership skills—together, we’ll learn and grow.

By registering, you are committing to actively participating in the book club, including leading a discussion on selected pages during future sessions. This accountability is key to fostering meaningful conversations and maintaining the success of the group.

PLEASE REGISTER BY Wednesday, January 22nd.

The Art, and Some Science, of Anchoring Learning

    Presented by Kim Whiteside

    Course preview:

According to recent brain science research and the results of 3D MRI scans, the adult brain can only hold about 2 – 4 new items of information in working memory at one time. After that, items tend to drop off and fade away--some never to return.

Thanks to this advanced imaging technology, we now better understand how the brain acquires, stores, retrieves and applies new knowledge. In this session, attendees will explore human cognitive architecture and ways to apply it during course design to create learning experiences that are “fastened in the mind” and effective.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Discuss concepts of Human Cognitive Architecture (HCA)

    • Apply HCA to a current lesson or learning experience

    • Explore the transformative potential of HCA in learning

Inclusive Design for Impactful Course Design

    Presented by Kim Whiteside

    Course preview:

In today's environment we have a diverse workforce and "one-size fits-all" training approaches tend to fall short in meeting the needs of this ever-changing workforce. Acknowledging the diverse needs and differences is essential to ensure course and instructional designers are creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Inclusive course design benefits and validates all members of an online learning community. Course and instructional designers can cultivate impactful learning experiences within digital settings by taking an inclusive course design approach. Utilizing these tips, course designers will help create a more inclusive, accessible, and equitable online learning environment.

    Learners will be able to:

    • Discuss what inclusive design is and its benefits.
    • Recognize how bias can impact course design.
    • Identify Universal Design for Learning principles.
    • Explore practical tips for incorporating inclusive design practices into course design.

    Providing Feedback

    Presented by Kylie Gottschalk

    Course preview:

Providing Feedback: Is there a science to providing feedback?

This session brings awareness to one of the most important leadership activities. Feedback is a method of communication between employee and leader in which both parties dialogue expectations, measure progress against goals and discuss ways to improve. During this dynamic session, leaders discover why many attempts at feedback fail. They learn a tool for ensuring that the feedback they provide, whether positive or corrective, has the best possible chance for success.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Understand that feedback is neither negative or positive- it's a method of communication. They will be able to dialogue expectations, measure progress against goals, and discuss ways to improve. They will have tools and skills to implement immediately after the session.
    • Why most attempts at feedback fall short
    • Formula for providing feedback
    • Model that visualizes barriers to feedback and illuminates opportunities
    • Formula for receiving feedback

    Communication for Connection

    Presented by Alan Feirer

    Course preview:

Communication is the one skill we use every day, in every environment, and in every situation. Because of this, it’s the one skill leaders must master and habitually improve above all else.

We’ve all experienced the fallouts of bad communication or the lack of communication. We’ve also been the source of communication mishaps. These mishaps cause dysfunctions within relationships, drama, misunderstandings, performance failures, and productivity concerns.

In this session, we will identify three common obstacles to effective communication. Once we are aware of them, we can take constructive steps to overcome them. Learn how to communicate in ways that build relationships, improve staff retention, and build engagement.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify 3 common obstacles to communication and apply their countermeasures.
    • Distinguish responses to unproductive behavior or lack of engagement.
    • Know and understand their own DiSC style and be able to read others’ styles.
    • Develop a habit of looking at situations in terms of the “behavior-outcome” model and use the model for more effective communication.
    • Learn BSaAFWYW technique to encourage specificity.

    Alan Feirer

Alan lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with his wife Julie. They have an adult daughter Mara in college. He holds membership in many professional organizations, including the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the Association for Talent Development (previous Central Iowa chapter President), the Downtown Des Moines Chamber, and FuseDSM.  Feirer's other interests include competitive Scrabble, exercise, travel, dining, and anything Disney.

Be Clear - Say What You Mean

    Presented by Lisa Behrends

    Course preview:

As business and HR leaders, we need to stop avoiding tough conversations because you think you are being polite. Many problems in the workplace are often due to not having clear communication. Sometimes we think it is easier to feed people half-truths because we do not want to hurt their feelings when in reality, we are making ourselves feel better.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Create a culture of improved wellness and high performance
    • Apply how to have tough conversations with employees and customers
    • Demonstrate how to use the tools introduced to redesign behavior change to solve problems

    Lisa Behrends

Lisa is a business strategist and executive who has traveled the globe to 21 countries and has lived in Japan, Italy, and the Philippines.
